Part I:  Professional Liability

  • Appreciate where the Pharmacy fits into the equation.
  • Be aware of the professional/legal climate in the health care industry.

  • Identify key areas that can effect the rise in professional liability claims.

  • Know when you need to buy professional liability insurance and when someone else  takes care of it for you.

  • Find suitable insurance coverage for yourself.

Part II:  Pharmacy Law Update

  • Briefly describe some of the changes going on in Managed Care that have legal implications.

  • Discuss the new court ruling regarding the use of prescription drugs for “Off-Label” use.

  • Describe how the pharmacist may become involved in special community health projects such as Immunization and Blood Testing Programs.

  • Describe the recent changes in the California Labor Codes that have affected the “exempt” employee status of a pharmacist.

  • Outline what must be done by a pharmacy that plans to store its prescription records at a site other than the pharmacy.

  • Discuss changes that have recently occurred regarding the Schedule II Triplicate (CURES Program, Use Exemption, and new Time Extension allowances).

  • Discuss the recent change for the Nurse Practitioner in being allowed to write (furnish) for Schedule III, IV, or V without having the name of the prescriber.

  • Describe some of the newer passed laws affecting the pharmacist’s practice
